How many seasons have you been skating with the DC Rollergirls, and for which teams?
2016 is my second season with the DC Rollergirls. I skate with the Cherry Blossom Bombshells and am also serving as captain of the DC All-Stars this season. Prior to transferring to DCRG I skated with Gotham Girls Roller Derby for three seasons.
How and why did you first get involved in roller derby?
I started skating with the intent to play roller derby in June 2010. I was living in California at the time, and a coworker approached me about trying out for the local league with her. She didn’t want to try out by herself, and she said I seemed like the kind of person who would try anything once. She was right about that; I was intrigued enough to attend a recruitment night with her at our local rink. We met some of the derby girls, they taught us a few basic moves, and I was hooked immediately. I went home and bought my own skates online that night.
What was your athletic background before learning how to play derby?
I was not sporty growing up. Prior to roller derby, my most athletic endeavor was spending two seasons with the Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps.
What’s the story behind your derby name?
For those who don’t know, “Byers” is my real last name. When it came time to choose my derby name, I was kicking around names with friends in my derby carpool. Someone suggested Byers Market, which is kind of lame, but that led us to Byers Remorse, which I liked.
What traditions or rituals do you have before skating in a bout?
On bout days, I sleep in as late as my nerves will allow and then I go out for breakfast with my husband. I always, always, always wear eye makeup and lipstick. I take my bout day makeup and manicure very seriously.
What’s your favorite DCRG memory?
Any time my team won. I really like winning.
