How many seasons have you been skating with the DC Rollergirls, and for which teams?
Season 11 will make the third. I’ve skated with the Cherry Blossom Bombshells, the National Maulers, and the Capital Offenders.
How and why did you first get involved in roller derby?
I went to a game with some friends and it was the first sport I felt like I’d rather be playing than watching.
What was your athletic background before learning how to play derby?
Nothing much in the way of conventional sports. I’ve always enjoyed group fitness classes…step, spin, boxing, yoga.
What’s the story behind your derby name?
My name is a play on the phrase “yes ma’am.” I go by Hemi because the league already had a Mayhem. I chose my nickname and number based on the 426 ci Hemi engine, a racing engine from the 60s.
What traditions or rituals do you have before skating in a bout?
Hydration and rest. Nothing stressful the night or morning before a game.
What’s your favorite DCRG memory?
Winning Season 10 champs as co-captain of the team. Feeling the trust and respect my teammates and captain had for each other throughout a really tough season. SHIMO!
